Tasting notes:

Pale straw with lime hues. Salty, sea-sprayed fruit contributes to a unique and complex oyster shell character which immediately grabs your attention, closely followed by complex aromas of almond meal. An underbelly of savouriness is complemented by fresh lemon, lime and white floral notes.  Textured and mouthwatering, there is obvious chemistry between the fruit and the oak. Flavours of subtle peach and white nectarine. Lively mineral acidity and luscious texture. Pure, powerful and unparalleled Chardonnay.

I thought the 2021 the finest Suckfizzle chardy to date – a year later, this steals the limelight. This is elegance and subtlety personified. And yet, there’s a latent power, it is Margaret River chardonnay after all. Wafts of funky sulphides, slips of lemon balm, lime oil and Meyer lemon zest plus juiciness mingling with pink grapefruit and fresh ginger. It’s neither a big wine, nor overworked but the fine-boned palate is layered with creamy lees, oak spice and some phenolic pull, and it glides across the palate buoyed by fine acidity. My greedy chardonnay mouth wants more.

I really like the Chardonnays from Stella Bella. They are powerful and piercingly intense. The 2022 vintage in Margaret River was warm and low yielding, especially for Chardonnay. I have been very impressed by the quality of the wines produced in this great season and am still deciding how good of a cellaring proposition they will make, and indeed, whether or not I even care because they offer such unfettered pleasure now. That said, this 2022 Suckfizzle Chardonnay is from the extreme south of Margaret River and the conditions down there are generally cooler, wetter and windier than the rest of the region. This is great for natural acid retention, especially in a warm vintage. This has crushed nuts, brine, yellow peach, green apple, yuzu and preserved citrus, pink grapefruit, saltbush, ocean spray and green olive. In the mouth, the tannic structure is open-weave and raw feeling—the fruit is powerful and concentrated and spools through the finish, propelled by penetrating acidity. Very good. It's a bit rambunctious at this early stage. 12.9% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

Light bright colour; cashew, lemon and grapefruit aromas, fresh and fruit driven, the fruit powerful and concentrated, blazing its path across the palate. Some biscuity oak. Long and balanced, with a refreshing dry aftertaste. A most impressive young chardonnay 22 DEC 2023 Drink 2024–2037
